Varadero occupies an enviable location on the Hicacos Peninsula, where more than 12 miles of white sandy beaches run the length of a narrow spit of land, just over a half-mile at its widest point. Tourism development efforts of the 1990s converted this coastal paradise into a tourist mecca geared primarily for Europeans and Canadians, with luxury resort-style hotels lining the coast. While you may have to look beyond Varadero for authentic Cuba, the five-star international hotels offer amenities you’d be hard-pressed to find elsewhere on the island.
